Everything we have looked at closely — judged on specifications, run times and installed cost, with the disadvantages left in.
Most gear reviews in this niche rank products in an order that reflects commission rates rather than performance. The approach here is narrower and, we think, more useful: work out what the equipment has to do in your house first, then judge each product against that requirement, and say plainly who should not buy it.
How things are judged
- Specifications that matter, not the headline number. For a battery station that means usable watt-hours and continuous plus surge output, not the marketing capacity. For a generator it means running watts, surge watts, and runtime at half load rather than at 25 percent.
- Installed cost, not sticker price. A standby generator is a slab, a gas line, a transfer switch and a permit. A hand pump is a well cap modification. Those costs often exceed the equipment.
- At least two real drawbacks in every piece. If we cannot name them, we have not looked hard enough to publish.
- Who it is wrong for. Every recommendation names the household that should buy something else instead.
- No invented testing. Where a claim comes from a manufacturer specification, published standard or third-party test, it is described that way rather than dressed up as personal experience.

Read the sizing before the review
A review can only tell you whether a product does what it claims. It cannot tell you whether that is the thing your house needs, and that is where most bad purchases originate. The load audit in Start Here takes a weekend and converts every one of these categories from a matter of opinion into arithmetic — the surge rating that will or will not start your well pump, the watt-hours that will or will not carry your refrigerator overnight.
So the sequence we would suggest is: sizing first, in Power & Backup or Water or Heat & Cold depending on the problem; then the review, to pick among the units that clear the bar. It is slower and it produces far fewer returns.
